Activity Description
Instructor will go over a series of drills for basic self defense techniques. All the drills that students will learn and perform are all applicable to the majority of martial arts techniques(ex. Karate, Taekwondo, Muy Thai, etc.). Before every drill instructor will demonstrate and perform each drill so students can have a better understanding of what it will look like. Skills that will be taught will be the ready position, punching, and kicking. While students are practicing the drill after the instructor’s demonstration, the instructor will go around the classroom monitoring students' form and watching out for errors.
Drill 1 Ready position: Instructor will demonstrate what ready position is which is having your feet shoulder with apart, non-dominant side of the individual body facing outward(legs, arms, and shoulders), dominant side of the body in the back, arms bent and hands at chest level, knees slightly bent, hands gripped into a first. Students will then practice the stance/position while alternating with how they regularly stand. Students will perform the drill until the instructor prompts students to stop.
Drill 2 Punches/Jabs: Instructor will demonstrate what correct for form jabbing/punching once all students are comfortable with the ready position. Correct form consists of being in the ready position, eyes facing target(in this drill straight ahead of the students), arms extending straight out, torso twisting when extending punch, fist is properly formed(thumb tucked right under fingers). This also applies to both side of the body dominant and nondominant side. Once instructor is done demonstrating students will then practice punching with both side dominant and non-dominant. Students will punch twice with their non-dominant side and then alternate to their dominant side. Students will practice the drill until the instructor says to stop.
Drill 3 Ready Position and Alternating Jabs: Instructor will briefly demonstrate the next drill which is transitioning from a regular stance to the ready position and alternating jabs with the nondominant and dominant side of the body immediately. Once students are done with the alternating jab in the ready position they will stand normally and repeat the movement again. Students will then practice the drill until the instructor says to stop.
Drill 4 Kicking: Instructor will demonstrate correct form when kicking, body is positioned in the ready position, knees up high and parallel to the waist, body is turning towards target when about to kick, and when extending the legs, it is straight and quick. Students will remain entirely in the ready position and use only their dominant leg for this drill. Students will then practice this drill until the instructor tells them to stop.
Drill 5 Ready position to alternating jabs to kicking: This drill is a continuation of drill 3 but adding the kicking technique right after the alternating jabs right after. Instructor will briefly go over the drill and demonstrate it with correct form and what it will look like before letting students practice the drill/movement. Students will practice the drill until the instructor tell them to stop.
