Track and Field Day

Objectives

  • Motor: Students will pass a pool noodle from starting cone to finishing cone as fast as they can and hand it over to their partner waiting on the finishing cone during the activity in ¾ trials.
  • Cognitive: During the reflection portion of class, students will be able to state one station they liked and the skill focus when chosen at random and verbally prompted.
  • Affective: Students will tell one classmate their favourite station and give them a high five at the closure portion of the activity.
  • Skill focus: Nontraditional activity, locomotor skills, cooperative games

  • Cones
  • Pool noodles
  • Fitness task cards

Activity Description

  • Students will be participating in stations that are related to track and field events. Each student will be placed in groups and there will be a total of 4 stations that the students will rotate around after 3 minutes at each station. The teacher will freeze when it’s time to rotate.
  • Station 1: Baton with a partner
    • Students will start from the cone with a baton (pool noodle) on their hands and their partner will be on the opposite side and students need to walk or speed walk to get the baton to their partner. Once the baton has been handed to their partner the next student will go and the instructions will repeat.
  • Station 2: Hurdles or noodle step over
    • Students will start from the starting cone and step over a hurdle if the hurdle is too high students can do a step over the noodle instead. Once the first student has gone, they will go back to the line and do some jumping jacks.
  • Station 3: Relay races
    • Students will start from one end of the cone and collect all the bean bags and bring them over to the cone. Once the student has gone to the con with al bean bags as fast as he/ she can they will receive a sticker from their paraprofessional (teacher will give sticker sheet to the paraprofessional ahead of time). For these relay races each student is racing each their however all students are winners that’s why they all receive stickers once they finished brining their bean bags back to the bucket.
  • Station 4: Track and field exercise cards
    • Students will pick a track and field theme card and the exercise that’s listed on the back of the card and work with each other.
