Cognitive: Students will understand the order of transitional steps in a dance in the cotton eye joe dance by being able to identify correct and incorrect movements, when shown a visual demonstration, during the check for understanding portion of class, when verbally prompted by the instructor.
Affective: Students will form a group to dance the Cotton-Eyed Joe at the end of the activity, encouraging each other with positive feedback.

Activity Description
The Cotton-Eyed Joe dance will be introduced with a bit of background about this energetic, festive dance. Second, students will learn the steps with an emphasis on rhythmic footwork and other coordinated movements. During the course of class, students will rehearse both solo and group dance. The celebration will climax in a rousing collective performance of Cotton-Eyed Joe, creating an atmosphere of fellowship and fun.
Basic Steps:
Start by tapping the right heel forward twice, then tapping the ground behind with the right toe twice.
Tap the right foot to the side and bring it in front, then tap to the side again and bring the right heel across and behind the body.
Shuffle to the right for 4 beats, then repeat the same sequence with the left foot.
Repetition and Practice: Emphasize the repetitive nature of the dance and encourage students to practice the steps slowly at first, focusing on the coordination of foot movements.
Music and Tempo: Encourage students to listen to the song "Cotton Eyed Joe" before practicing the dance, so they become familiar with the tempo and rhythm of the music.
