Activity Description
Background of Capoeira, its cultural relevance and how rhythm is an integral part of this form of martial art.
Give out the Berimbaus to your learners, explaining at length on how they are supposed to be held as well as manipulated in perfect detail.
Form a circle with students designating a space for the Capoeira game and each student will be holding onto an instrument if not participating or clapping to the beat of the metronome if not participating in the circle.
The students will take turn entering the circle for about 30 seconds, controlled movements(Sliding side to side), and rhythmic interactions with their berimbaus or instruments.
Instructor will then gather the students and discuss about how they feel in relation to their experience, highlighting the difficulties and successes related to the control of the berimbau.
Conclude with a reflection session where students will share how being engaged in the Capoeira Circle Game will have enhanced their object control skills and their knowledge of other cultures.
Modification
Challenge: Create more complex rhythmic patterns for the advanced students to challenge their object control in their movements. While sliding students can use their arm to jab the air while following the beat of the metronome. Students can also utilize a tennis ball while passing to another person in the circle.
Simplified: Start working simple rhythmic patterns helping more towards students with little or no Capoeira experience. Students can sway their body side to side if sliding it too difficult.
